Abstract

Aquatic hyphomycetes were isolated from living root tissues of spruce, birch and maple in a woodland stream of Nova Scotia by plating and aeration techniques. Of the 12 species recorded, Anguillospora filiformis and Heliscus lugdunensis were most common. Fungi were more common on bark than on decorticated segments. Aerated root segments yielded three species that were not recorded by the plating method. Anguillospora filiformis, Articulospora antipodea, Cylindrocarpon aquaticum, Mycocentrospora clavata, Mycocentrospora sp., Tetrabrachium elegans and Varicosporium giganteum are recorded for the first time as root endophytes.
