Abstract
Endophthalmitis is a serious ocular inflammation. Fortunately, uncommon, it often causes complete loss of useful vision. It occurs most often after ocular surgery but may also develop following penetrating eye injury or systemic infections. Although it can be non-infectious in origin, most cases appear to be due to microorganisms, usually bacteria. Current management of endophthalmitis includes diagnostic vitreous tap and antibiotic therapy (topical, intravitreal, peri-ocular and systemic), sometimes combined with vitrectomy. It is important that ophthalmology departments agree policies for the investigation and management of this serious but uncommon infection.
