Abstract

Techniques of obtaining biopsy material are reviewed and catheter biopsy is assessed with special reference to the modified King's College bioptome and the long-sheath technique. Endomyocardial biopsy for the study of heart muscle disease and cardiomyopathy in children and infants has been assisted by the development of a long-sheath technique and small biopsy forceps. Endomyocardial biopsy is a useful practical method in clinical investigation, essential in monitoring the rejection of a transplanted heart; however, it is also of value in diagnosing specific heart muscle disease and investigating myocarditis and cardiomyopathy.
