Abstract

Endometriosis is an abnormal development of endometrial stroma and glands functioning outside the normal location: the uterine cavity and wall. This entity is estimated to affect one in five women of reproductive age and causes up to 30-50% of infertility cases. Depending on the location, there are two large groups of endometriosis: pelvic or extrapelvic. The latter can affect almost all organs (except the heart and spleen). The incidence of extrapelvic location is 0.9% to 1.5% of all cases of endometriosis, and the mean age of onset is usually 34 years. Umbilical cutaneous endometriosis is rare and is the most frequent extrapelvic location (3.2% to 40%). The coexistence of primary skin and pelvic endometriosis is 14% to 26%, and only 12% to 15% of patients with umbilical endometriosis have a previous diagnosis of pelvic endometriosis.
