Abstract

41 patients were treated for endometriosis with an oral progestogen in most cases norethisterone acetate. In preoperative cases treatment was administered both continously and cyclically depending upon the incursion of side effects. In 22 out of 28 women given preoperative treatment improvement was seen before laparotomy. In postoperative treatment without previous hormone therapy all 18 cases improved whether due to surgery and/or therapy. It was undetermined if the decidual reaction followed by necrosis was the effective mechanism of the progestogens.
