Abstract

The patients in this study, 83 women in whom an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) had been retained for 1 to 15 years, constitute a selected group who were referred to the hospital with various clinical symptoms. Among them were 14 cases of unplanned sterility due to forgotten intrauterine pessary. In the majority of the women, the endometrium showed no recognizable abnormality on histological examination, despite prolonged retention of the IUCD. Of 75 patients from whom tissue was available for histologic study, chronic endometritis was present in 13 (17 per cent) and mild degrees of glandular hyperplasia in 6 (8 per cent). No case of atypical hyperplasia or carcinoma was encountered.
