Abstract

Endometriosis is a hormone dependent, inflammatory condition resulting in pain and infertility. Clinical and molecular evidence supports impairment of embryo implantation in affected women (1). CYP26A1 encodes a hydroxylating enzyme responsible for the conversion of active retinoic acid to the inactivated form, and its deficiency results in implantation failure and reduced litter size in mice (2). CYP26A1 is encoded at a locus near 10q26, a region associated with endometriosis risk in a genome wide linkage analysis (3).
