Abstract

Endocrine emergencies are rare conditions and constitute only a small percentage of the emergency workload in general hospitals and emergency units. This article discusses pathogenesis, symptoms, diagnostic procedures and management of diabetic ketoacidosis, acute adrenal insufficiency and thyrotoxic storm. Most important is an early diagnosis without any delay by awaiting laboratory results or performing further investigations because outcome is crucially dependent on the physicians immediate initiation of specific treatment.
