Abstract

This paper considers a non-symmetric quality competition that is occurring not only within the same industry, but also across industries. Both intra- and inter-industry quality competition explain why some industries attract higher R&D expenditures in the R&D race. We find that in equilibrium, higher profits in more advanced industries induce greater efforts in R&D, and consequently a shorter duration of the monopoly position of quality leaders.
