Abstract

Abstract It has been known for some time that tumours can produce hormones. Endocrine syndromes caused by ‘ectopic' production of hormones have several features that distinguish them from overproduction of hormones by endocrine glands. In addition, specific criteria must be met to confirm ectopic hormone production. In this contribution, these features are discussed. The pathogenesis, clinical features and management of hypercalcaemia, SIADH and ectopic adrenocorticotrophic hormone production are discussed in some detail, as well as a brief discussion of some more unusual conditions.
