Abstract

Data are presented suggesting that local, intrafollicular diffusion of estrogen stimulates ovarian follicular hyperemia and subsequent follicular growth in the lizard Anolis carolinensis. Hypophysectomized animals with inactive ovaries were treated with saline or folliclestimulating hormone (FSH), alone and in combination with estradiol dosages. FSH alone stimulated growth of larger follicles, and estradiol enhanced the growth effects of FSH on follicles at or above about 2.0 mm diameter. Also, hypophysectomized animals possessing large, preovulatory follicles were treated with saline, FSH, estradiol, and progesterone, alone or in various dosage combinations. Estradiol alone stimulated growth of larger follicles over that obtained after saline or even FSH treatment. Progesterone, on the other hand, inhibited FSH-induced maintenance of larger follicles. Finally, intrafollicular implantation of estradiol crystals led to local follicular hyperemia and selective enhancement of follicular growth. Cholesterol implantation or surgery alone had no such effect.
