Abstract

Five multiparous Polish Large White sows were utilized to determine steroid hormone concentrations in utero-ovarian blood. The cannulae were inserted into the utero-ovarian vein (UOV) and blood samples were collected hourly from day 12 to 18 of the estrous cycle. Androstenedione (A 4), testosterone (T), estrone (E 1) and estradiol-17β (E 2) plasma concentrations were measured by RIA. Utero-ovarian plasma progesterone (P 4) concentrations decreased rapidly during day 14, 15, or 16 of the cycle. Coincidentally the concentrations of A 4, E 2 and E 1 decreased for about 50 h, after which they began to increase. The concentration of T changed only slightly during the experiment.
