Abstract

Endocavity MRI of the Pelvis Nandita M. deSouza Harwood Academic Publishers 2001 Shirley McCarthy M.D., Ph.D.*, * Department of Radiology Yale University. The book is an extremely well written review of endocavitary coils and their applications. Organizationally, there are six chapters. The first chapter begins with a brief review of the basic principles of MRI followed by more specific review of the technical aspects and practical use of endocavitary coils. The second chapter is not only an excellent perspective on the clinical aspects of cervical cancer and its imaging, but also the utility of endocavitary coils in the diagnosis and staging of this disease. The illustrations are superb; there are detailed images of both anatomy and cancer. The third chapter is a comprehensive discussion of prostate cancer and the role of MRI, particularly endorectal MRI. The fourth chapter on the bladder neck, urethra, and seminal tract is similarly done well. The next chapter, which discusses the rectum, as with the previous chapters, has numerous high quality illustrations of both anatomy and its pathological counterparts. Finally, the last chapter is an overview of the anal sphincter and includes detailed views of the sphincter mechanism as it normally appears, as well as its imaging appearance following trauma and other diseases. Each chapter contains a comprehensive list of detailed references. The illustrations and images are outstanding, and the text is extremely useful not only for understanding how to use endorectal coils and interpret the subsequent images, but also for understanding the clinical issues in the various diseases where coils are indicated. This text is highly recommended for any center performing or planning to perform endocavitary MRI, as it will serve as a very useful guide in conducting these studies.
