Abstract
Abstract The distribution of approx. 1260 Iberian and Balearic endemics into 50 geographic sub-units clearly shows which are the most favoured regions from a floristic point of view. About one half of the endemics are in the South and Southeast, under a hypothetical line traced between Huelva and Majorca. As expected, Ibero-African taxa tend also to grow in the lower half of the Peninsula. One half of the endemic taxa are local endemics, i.e. they grow in one geographical sub-unit only. Local endemics produce a pattern of distribution which is similar to that of general endemics. Sierra Nevada (Granada province) representes the highest concentration of endemic taxa in the Iberian Peninsula and probably in continental Europe.
