Abstract

Through her reflections on dealing with dialysis for end-stage renal disease and awaiting a kidney transplant, the author presents interesting insights into how her experience was shaped by the physical, emotional, and multicultural forces she faced. Among the issues that the author discusses are her ambivalent feelings regarding the desire to demonstrate independence versus the desire to have support from a strong family unit and between pursuing a regular lifestyle and receiving social validation of the daily difficulties posed by the complications of her chronic illness.
