Abstract

This essay highlights the paradigmatic transitions in Merton's spiritual development from his conversion to Catholicism to the last years of his life. It does this by focusing on his encounters with three primary others: God, the world, and Eastern religious traditions. Under these three rubrics, Fowlers stage‐theory of faith development is employed to assist in explicating, describing, and highlighting particular tenets that characterize Merton's spiritual development at certain moments during his life. This essay demonstrates the value of Fowler's descriptive categories for interpreting spiritual development and achieves a concise account of Merton's growth in faith and responsibility.
