Abstract

In connection with the development of “talking-book” reproducers, measurements have been made at the National Bureau of Standards which show that the use of ported enclosures for loudspeakers is to be preferred over the use of totally enclosed mountings, especially with respect to the acoustic distortion at low frequencies. The discussion to be given will include a description of the experimental work carried out at the Bureau, an explanation of the cabinet design formulas, the procedure used in making an enclosure for a particular loudspeaker, the effect of absorbent material on high frequency response, and the tuning of the port or vent. A short demonstration will give an idea of how much acoustic improvement can be obtained in a portable unit by proper mounting of the loudspeaker.
