Abstract
Results dealing with the photophysical properties of complexes of the Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ ions with encapsulating ligands are reviewed. It is shown that such compounds are species capable of emitting a strong, long-lived luminescence in water solution. The use of these compounds as luminescent labels is described. Selected examples are discussed in an attempt to analyze the factors that determine the luminescence intensity.
