Abstract
1. The results of this investigation lend further support to the observation that cracks can be induced in enamel by cutting instruments commonly utilized in every-day operative procedures. 2. Partial veneer crown preparations revealed less severe cracks than Class V cavity preparations. 3. Because partial veneer preparations involve more surface enamel removal than do small intracoronal preparations, a reduced effect on the residual surfaces could be expected. 4. Diamond cutting instruments were less severe in their effect than carbide burs. 5. The high-speed water turbine powered instrument produced fewer cracks in teeth than the air turbine or low-speed powered instruments. 6. No direct correlation was evident between various speeds of rotation and frequency of crack occurrence.
