Abstract

In quest of Bugis gods : between myth and ritual, silence and speech From numerous vestiges inherited from the pre-Islamic religion of the Bugis in the South Celebes (Indonesia), the authors attempt here to define the figure assumed by the gods in a society whose religious universe appears from the start to be very polarized. Each author in turn, and starting from the opposite pole, follows the path that runs from myth to ritual. The « intermediary » category (like that of « the ancestors » and ethereal spirits between the gods and man, « secret language » between mutism and speech, priests between man and woman) takes its place within the heart of such an universe.
