Jean Sgard : Parallel deaths. The development of the parallel drawn between Voltaire and Rousseau since their deaths in 1778 is seen in a study of 22 contemporary periodicals. Immediately the tone adopted for Voltaire was that of poetical apotheosis, while Rousseau's subsequent death prompted prosaic announcements. But soon interest was manifested for the circumstances surrounding the latter's death ; this was followed by parallels drawn between ithe two Philosophes. At first a comparison, the parallel became opposition which reflected the judgements of the two upon each other.
