Abstract

The redox-initiated emulsion copolymerization of vinyl acetate and Veova 10 was studied in a completely automated loop reactor. The effect of the flow rate on the shear-induced coagulation was investigated for recipes containing varying amounts of surfactants. Also, the effect of the start-up strategy on the smoothness of the operation and on the amount of off-specification product was studied for high solids content systems. A mathematical model for the process was developed. Fairly good agreement was obtained between experimental data and model predictions.
