Abstract
Abstract This chapter examines how China managed to build a military befitting a great power without provoking the United States to strangle its modernization efforts early on. Empirically, this chapter focuses on China’s attempts to emulate the United States in pursuing the ability to fight wars in the information age, pursuing “legitimate” military activities like humanitarian or peacekeeping missions, and participating in arms control regimes. It also covers one case of failed emulation—China’s aircraft carrier program. Furthermore, this chapter discusses how China targets US military vulnerabilities with its anti-access and area denial (A2/AD) strategy.
