Abstract

Community identity, competence, and self‐direction rest on human relatedness, on the sense of belonging and being “in place.” Relat‐edness is the essence of community, the foundation of communitas, or the reciprocity of caring and being cared for. A well‐functioning community, rich in natural support systems, offers its members a firm sense of identity, competence, and self‐direction.
