Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction to Jazz Dance is an elective course for undergraduates in a midsize, liberal arts college, whose students are typically risk-averse in the academic environment. Therefore, the course was created with an emphasis on accessible vernacular movement to empower the students to express their individuality. The one-semester course exposes students to the history of jazz dance in cultural and historical context, both kinetically and cognitively, from its West African roots to present-day evolution in popular culture and on stage. Because vernacular and traditional dance is essentially social dance, students become increasingly comfortable with the self-expression that constitutes jazz dance.
