Abstract

The opioid epidemic continues to ravage communities in the United States. Spectrum Health (SH) implemented the Eat, Sleep, Console (ESC) program for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) in May 2021 after a trial. This approach has been shown to reduce the length of stay and decrease the use of morphine. Our goal was to keep postpartum women and their newborns together, instead of sending the newborn to the NICU. ESC empowers postpartum women to provide care for their newborns and educates them on interventions effective for newborns experiencing withdrawal. At SH we required all caregivers who would interact with ESC families to attend unconscious bias training focused on addiction.
