Abstract
A diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) introduces a challenging period in a person’s life whereby decisions regarding treatment and management are made in the context of significant new information that needs to be processed. This reoccurs as the condition progresses and health status is affected. Empowering people to make informed decisions often requires individualized approaches in order to understand the health belief and motivation behind the decision and also to develop a trusting, therapeutic rapport with the person. This case documents one such approach taken with a person diagnosed nine years ago with MS. An educational intervention was adopted to empower him to make an informed decision regarding his current use of cannabis for symptom control.
