Abstract

This study investigates the power relationship in the text between individual and institution through the lens of linguistic ethnography in the online discourse. Following Smith’s definition of active texts in combination with the theory of entextualization, this paper is a case study of the online protest of tenants against a company named Eggshell Apartment on a Chinese social media named Weibo. This study aims to understand how does the individual negotiate meaning and power relations with the institution through text.
