Abstract
In Canada, an employer has a right, without prior administrative authorisation, to abolish a position or reduce its workforce on economic grounds. An employee who loses his/her job on such grounds is entitled to a period of notice of termination or compensation in lieu of such notice under the applicable ordinary law or, under employment standards legislation, to a statutory notice or compensation in lieu thereof in the case of individual or group termination.
