Abstract

Abstract Trends in employment on large landed estates in north‐west Sutherland are reviewed and analysed by estate type. Decreases in employment occurred on all estate types, but was greatest on sporting estates. If employment levels on sporting estates were increased to those on the other types of estates, the overall increase in employment in the study area would be around 15. The nature of the motivations of the landowners means that such an increase is unlikely to occur.
