Employment of People with Disabilities in Bulgaria - Problems and Perspectives (Integrated vs. Specialised Employment)

Abstract

In the practice and in literature there is a vast range of illness that can lead to disabilities, and also other reasons for someone to become disabled. This paper will try to outline the basic difficulties connected in labor realization of people with disabilities: the existing legal, social and economic issues in that sphere. In order to accomplish this I shall outline four major problems: - To give an overview of itself and the constraint it creates in employment; - Examination of major legal and social provisions for economic realization of people with disabilities in Bulgaria, in the transition towards market economy; - Evaluation of the desirability of policies and derivation of lessons that can be usefully applied in different situations. The paper uses the terminology of the International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities and Handicaps (ICIDH) of the World Health Organization (WHO), using disabled and disability as the general descriptive terms rather than handicapped and handicap.
