Abstract

Lessons in resilience have highlighted the trials and tribulations of extraordinarily successful people with learning disabilities (LD) and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in history. If one is to believe extant folk wisdom, the names Leonardo da Vinci, Edgar Degas, Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, and Nelson Rockefeller surface as examples of individuals with LD and/or ADHD who have succeeded despite the odds. We are warned specifically about the diagnosis of LD in a post-mortem state (Adelman & Adelman, 1987 ), so in our work we look for living examples of resilience—to name a few, those with LD and/or ADHD who have succeeded despite significant problems in learning, processing, attention, and reading.
