Abstract

In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in minimum wage policy in Latin America and the Caribbean. Governments in the region have tended to make increasing use of statutory minimum wages. As a result, during the first decade of this century the minimum wage increased by 40 per cent in real terms across the region as a whole (ILO 2010b). Even in this context, the path followed by Argentina from 2003–11 is remarkable: during this period, the minimum wage increased six-fold in nominal terms and three-fold in real terms.
