Abstract

Due to the increase interest of global warming, huge concerns focus on using renewable energy sources (RES) in microgrids (MGs) and improving their operation and stability. This research suggests employing flywheel energy storage system (FESS) as an environmental energy storage system to stabilize MG frequency during the island mode of operation. Also, this research presents a distribution static var compensator (DSTATCOM) to stabilize the voltage during three phase fault and mitigate the impacts of sag short duration event. The results supported employing FESS to stabilize frequency during the island mode of operation as well as employing DSTATCOM for voltage regulation during the short disturbances and reduce their impacts to improve the power quality (PQ) during the MG operation. The results validated using MATLAB software package.
