Abstract

The municipality of Kolda, capital of the region located in southern Senegal, is marked by a high unemployment rate (30.8%). Despite its agricultural potential, agriculture is not very attractive and remains unprofitable, which pushes most young people to migrate to urban centers in search of employment. Often without professional training and in precarious situations, these young people, unable to find better opportunities, turn to the profession of motorcycle taxi driver, commonly known here as "moto-jakarta", to meet the still weak demand for transportation services. This study entitled "Youth Employment in the Municipality of Kolda: Motorcycle Taxi Driving as an Alternative" is based on a sample of 225 motorcycle taxi drivers out of a total of 948 identified. The survey revealed that 75% of them are between 18 and 35 years old and 56.9% say they are not very satisfied with their current situation. In addition, 32% of the respondents are tempted by clandestine immigration (by sea). Furthermore, in terms of safety, only 12% have a driver's license. At the time of the survey, the Kolda Fire Department had registered 17 fatalities, including 6 deaths from moto-jakarta accidents.
