Abstract

One of the most controversial issues in psychotherapy research is whether psychotherapeutic interventions should be manualized and evaluated in randomized clinical trials (RCTs). This controversy was spawned by the 1995 publication by a task force from the Clinical Division of the American Psychological Association of a list of validated treatments. One immediate question is: What criteria should be used to evaluate psychotherapy research? A special issue of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology addresses this and other questions that arise in the search to define empirically supported or validated therapies.
