Abstract

The communication costs have now assumed a critical role in the cost-structure analysis for large computer-communication networks. Therefore, an efficient and cost-effective utilization of available transmission facilities becomes a prime objective in order to achieve minimum overall costs. Using heuristic curve fitting on the available data, we develop empirical relationships between the communication cost elements and the channel bit rate. The cost sensitivity is investigated relative to channel bit rate. It is found that the communication cost cannot be held completely insensitive to channel bit rate, though this sensitivity is marginal in the range of higher channel bit rates.
