Abstract

This paper examines the causal relationship between consumer and producer price changes. The Sims and Granger causality tests are used to test for causality between consumer and producer prices. Both tests support the hypothesis of causality from consumer to producer prices. This suggests that the estimated parameters of a one-sided lag structure, which assumes the conventional wisdom of producer price changes leading consumer price changes, may be biased and inconsistent.
