Abstract

In gas chromatography, Golay’s equation shows that column efficiency, expressed as the height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP), strongly depends on the linear velocity of the carrier gas and the oven temperature. The influence of the temperature is complex, as it acts through diffusion coefficients and compound behavior. A new equation directly relating HETP to velocity and column temperature is proposed. It is based on a combination of the long-established empirical equation of de Wet and Pretorius and a modified form the Golay equation. This new equation is tested with two different columns. The fit of the model to the experimental results is excellent.
