Abstract

Travel time reliability is one of the most important indications of quality of service in bus systems. The automatic vehicle location (AVL) data of two typical bus routes in Shanghai are used to analyse bus travel time reliability. One bus line is in urban area and the other is in suburban area. Five reliability indices are used to capture the various characteristics of bus travel time fluctuations, which are planning time, buffer time, buffer time index, punctuality index based on routes and deviation index based on stops. The results indicates that peak hours have more obvious impact on travel time reliability and longer distance between adjacent stops causes higher buffer time at off peak hours. A bus in suburban area has more stable travel time than a bus in urban area. The travel time reliability control measures are suggested at the end.
