Abstract
The article investigates the place and role of modern Russia and Russia of the past in global historical processes. On various examples of European powers, the process of formation and destruction of empires is considered. The history of the formation of Russia as an empire, as a great power of the past and present is analyzed. Estimations are given to the expansion of the space of Russian civilization and the clashes with the interests of Western powers that took place in the past. It is concluded that at present the West has begun the next stage of the centuries-old confrontation, in which Russia has no right to make a mistake and will not be able to retreat, but must realize its global civilizational path.
