Abstract

Emphysematous gastritis is a life-threatening diagnosis with high rate of mortality. It is a rare infection of the gastric and bowel wall caused by gas-forming bacteria, such as Klebsiella, Escherichia coli, and bacteria. In typical cases, gas is seen along the lining of the stomach wall in a nonlinear fashion on a computed tomography scan. Alcoholic, diabetic, and immunosuppressed patients are at highest risk. Symptoms are nonspecific. Many patients present with advanced presentation. Early diagnosis and aggressive management are key. Because of the high operative risk, patients are initially managed with broad-spectrum antibiotics and supportive treatment, but in cases with progressive symptoms surgery may be indicated.
