Abstract

Empathy has long been understood to be a significant issue acnas the healing arts. In this article we briefly review our emerging understanding of the neurological basis for the human capacity for empathy and the various ways in which empathy has been conceptualized and defined. For nursing education, the transformative power of empathy is found only when a nurse can accurately communicate an empathetic connection to his/her patient. To that end, several empathy-enhancing strategies are presented designed to provide nurses with methods by which to foster greater empathy for patient experiences.
