Abstract

Of 3419 women sterilized at Chulalongkorn Hospital Bangkok Thailand in 1975 1117 received laparoscopic outpatient interval sterilization and 2307 were sterilized postpartum by conventional Pomeroy tubal ligation. From these 2 groups of 150 women each were matched for Thai race Buddhist religion age of 35 years or less residence in Bangkok and sterilization performed 12 months previously for socioeconomic reasons to assess emotional distress associated with the prior procedure. Psychophysiologic and emotional symptoms were reported by 41.3% in the interval group and 42% in the postpartum. Possible causes were found for 90.3% of symptomatic women (irritability headache weakness giddiness fainting dyspepsia palpitations backache lower abdominal discomfort and depression) in the interval group and for 90% in the postpartum. Psychiatric examination revealed 90% of subjects in both groups complaining of emotional or psychophysiological symptoms had personality disorders poor familial background marital and economic problems or previous psychiatric disorders. Little or no change in sexual desire was reported for both groups. The majority of patients were satisfied with their operation (99.3% in interval and 97.3% in postpartum).
