Abstract

In the article, the main provisions of the monograph “The Chekhov Play: A New Interpretation”, written by Harvey Pitcher, the English researcher of A. P. Chekhov’s works, and devoted to the peculiarities of the play “Uncle Vanya”, are revealed. The researcher’s approach to the play in terms of its emotional content is identified. As a result of the conducted analysis, the interpretation of “Uncle Vanya” as a play about emotional contact between people is suggested. The relevance of the work is conditioned by the importance of Pitcher’s research for understanding Chekhov’s dramaturgy. The novelty of the research is in the fact that this monograph has not been translated into Russian, and in our work Pitcher’s interpretation of Chekhov’s drama is presented for the first time.
