Abstract

Abstract Over a hundred years ago, William James asked, “What is an emotion?” Today, the answer still remains unclear. Several replies have been proposed in response to this question, but they all seem to be unsatisfactory. After briefly describing some of these replies, I propose considering emotion as a subtle general mental mode. I then describe this mode by referring to its logic, psychological mechanism, and psychological nature.
