Abstract

Blood gas analysis (BGA) is a quick and easily performed test even in pediatric patients. It provides information on acid-base balance, ventilatory and oxygenation function as well as electrolyte balance. The choice of the best sample to use (arterial, capillary, venous), based on clinical conditions and anamnestic data, is important to optimize the information of BGA. Once available, the step-wise assessment may guide interpretation of the examination by allowing identification of pathologies of different origins and distinguishing between acute and chronic forms.
