Abstract Relative line intensities have been measured, with a rather good degree of reliability, at nine definite positions in the Crab Nebula. Although a proper analysis of these data will require detailed and specific photoionization calculations, some preliminary statements about elemental abundances are proposed here. An interesting detail is the possible appearance of a carbon recombination line in one spectrum; if confirmed, this would indicate that a large abundance of carbon is present at one place in the supernova remnant. Finally, it is suggested that certain other investigations of the Crab Nebula, although they have probably not yet been seriously attempted, deserve high priorities in modern observational astronomy.
