Abstract

Strong emission has been observed in the reaction of KrF2 with SiH4. The emission spectra have been identified to be the B2∑ → X2∑ transition of KrF. The dependence of the spectral shape of the emission has been examined as a function of argon pressure. The pressure dependence of the spectral shape appears to be due to vibrational relaxation in the B2∑ state. The emission intensity as a function of SiH4 and KrF2 concentration has been measured. Since the KrF(X2∑) ground-state binding energy is less than 100 cm−1, which is substantially smaller than the room-temperature thermal energy, the ground-state bottlenecking of KrF is negligible. Therefore, for any branching ratio of B to X formation, there should be a population inversion on the KrF B2∑ → X2∑ transition.
