Abstract

AbstractThe neighbourhood of Haworth excepted) the death of Emily Bronte in December I848 went unheeded. Other events and other people filled the newspapers and occupied the attention of the nation. But unlike other authors and poets of the time) Emily's works have endured and have achieved the immortality that the Bronte sisters sought. In this memorial lecture by Professor Ewbank) the reasons for this immortality are considered. They relate to 'immortality' in the sense of 'timelessness' and 'universality'. It was the genius of Emily that her thoughts and words are not bound by the constraints of time and place.
